Medicinal Plants: A Natural Treasure to Rediscover
Medicinal plants have always been with us, protagonists of stories that smell of tradition and nature. Just think that the Egyptians already used them for balms and ointments, while the Romans grew them in gardens to prepare herbal teas and remedies. And today? They continue to be irreplaceable for those seeking wellness in a natural way!
Medicinal Plants in Everyday Life
These plants have always been nature's "first aid". Chamomile relaxes, fennel aids digestion, while lemon balm is perfect for finding calm after a stressful day. And they don't stop there: in addition to being used for herbal teas and essential oils, they are also essential for natural creams and even for some liqueurs such as Artichoke, Absinthe, Gentian and many others!
Production in Italy: A Tradition Looking to the Future
In Italy, the cultivation of medicinal plants has deep roots. Already in the Middle Ages, monks were true masters in the art of transforming them into natural remedies, in fact the monks The Benedictines and the Dominicans played a crucial role in the cultivation of medicinal plants, an activity closely linked to the care of the sick and the sustenance of the surrounding communities.
In the "Hortus Simplicium" , gardens dedicated exclusively to medicinal herbs, plants were grown that were used to prepare remedies such as herbal teas, ointments and tinctures. This tradition gave rise to the botanical gardens of the Renaissance.
In addition to their medical function, these gardens served for the study and transmission of knowledge. The Salerno Medical School , often associated with monasteries, was a point of reference for medieval medicine, where tradition and empirical innovation merged.
This cultural legacy continues today, with some monasteries having preserved the cultivation of medicinal plants as a symbol of balance between man and nature.
Today, however, the production of medicinal plants in Italy is constantly growing but remains insufficient compared to the national need, in fact with a cultivation area of 7000 hectares (among aromatic, medicinal and seasoning plants) we can only cover 30% of the internal demand, which is covered for 70% by imports from foreign countries where, in addition to lower production and processing costs, there is very often a lower quality due to the lack of clear regulations for imports. In our country, production is concentrated above all in regions such as Basilicata, where more than 50 species are grown on 210 hectares.
Modern techniques, such as low-temperature drying, ensure high-quality products with a maximum content of active ingredients.
